Our extended family of 9, 5 from Maryland and 4 visiting from Montana, did the 10am guided kayak tour and thoroughly enjoyed the experience!
As a native to the area and my first time visiting Assateague as an adult, I felt like it was a great way to tour parts of the island, learn some history, and see it's beautiful wildlife. Our guides were great, particularly Anthony, and how he engaged our group of kids (ages 6, 7, 9, 10, and 12).
Definitely leave enough time to get through the gates and get on the island. The kayak tour is pretty long for a workout but you take lots of breaks. There are bathrooms and a small shop at the kayak stand.
My only downside to this tour is I would have preferred a smaller tour group - with two guides we had ~25 people. At times it was hard to hear them because the group would get too spaced out and I prefer a more intimate tour experience.
Overall, great time and memories!

We took the Assateague Outfitters Wildlife Discovery Tour on Sunday, June 1, 2025, departing from the Bayside Stand (10:00 am - 1:00 pm). Our group had 5 adults, 1 child under 13, and 9 people total, plus two fantastic guides, Tish and Raiden (hope I have the spelling right!).
They gave a very informative and engaging tour of the Assateague wildlife. We saw about 6-9 ponies, various birds, and even stopped for some net fishing along the beach — where we caught a small blue crab and a few smaller fish.
The area had some strong storms the day before, so it was a little windy, and we couldn’t kayak quite as far as usual, but it was still a great adventure. I’d definitely recommend it as a family-friendly outing, especially for families with older kids who can help paddle, since the current on the way back can get a bit strong.

We went out as a group 9 and had an amazing time. Our guide was super knowledgeable and made sure to tell us all about the local wildlife, the areas history, and hands on experience clamming, catching crabs, etc. The ponies are there and amazing. Will be back next year! These guys are great and proceeds support the local wildlife and habitat so very worth it!
